How to install Fonts

Computers, tablets and mobile phones, have some number of already installed fonts.

If you want to use a different font, you have to install it on your device. On the internet, you can find a variety of fonts, from manuscript sources to sources that include symbols or graphics called dingbats.

There are many sites where you can download fonts by category. Some of the best are DaFont,  Fontspace, FontSquirrel, 1001FreeFonts. Searching through the Internet, you can find many more.

You have to know, that when you download a font, not all contain all the characters. Some don't have accented character, numbers, special characters or punctuation. To know if the source has all the character we need, usually, the website shows a picture with every character in it.

Download the font to your device. If it's in a .zip or .rar file, you have to unzip it.  Extract the files you have downloaded. The most common type of file fonts is .ttf and .otf, for example, roboto.ttf. These are the files you have to install on your device. 


Windows 10, 8 and 7

Double-click on the font file. In the preview windows, click on install.

Under any version of windows

Place the font files into the Fonts folder, usually C:\Windows\Fonts or C:\WINNT\Fonts
(can be reached as well by the Start Menu - Control Panel - Appearance and Themes - Fonts).


Mac OS 10.3 or above

Double-click the font file. Click on "Install font" button at the bottom of the preview.

Under any version of Mac OS 

Put the files into /Library/Fonts (for all users), or into /Users/Your_username/Library/Fonts (for you only).


Apple doesn’t allow for third party fonts to be installed directly into the iOS system. You need another application to install them. AnyFont and FondFont are applications for iphone and ipad that allows you to take your fonts and install them. The price of AnyFont is  1.79 euros. and  FondFont 0.99 euros.
